The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that daily power cuts would not increase despite the shut down of one generator at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant due to the shortage of coal.
With this shut down, the national grid will lose 270 megawatts. However, this will be replaced with the 165 megawatt Kelanitissa Power Plant and hydro power, the CEB said.
The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant currently produces 540 megawatts of power a day.The CEB said there were coal stocks to operate two generators at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant until 08 January. About 5,000 tonnes of coal were needed daily to operate the two generators. A ship carrying 60,000 tonnes of coal is scheduled to arrive on 08 January.
