The Special Task Force (STF) has so far distributed approximately 400 solar power light units among needy children in Bakmitiyawa, Mamaduwa, Kekirawa and Hasalaka under ‘Darkness to Light’ social care programme. These units, courtesy the social care project launched in New South Wales, Australia by Chandra Fernando and his wife Maria Fernando were provided to children dependent on bottle lamps. Commandant of the STF and Attorney-at-Law Varuna Jayasundara said that the project would greatly help families who couldn’t afford electricity. Australia-based Sri Lankans launched the project in the wake of media reports of a girl who achieved success in her life by studying with the aid of a bottle lamp.
