The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardana to amend the existing provisions of the Motor Traffic Act to provide for the registration of electric three-wheelers.
Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena told reporters on Tuesday that electrically charged batteries were used to manufacture electric three-wheelers and the tare weight of such three-wheelers exceeds 500 kilos due to the weight of the battery.
However, according to the Motor Traffic Act, the tare weight of a motor tricycle should not exceed 500 kilos and the gross weight should not exceed 1,000 kilos, he said.
“The Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman was cleared by the Attorney General. The Cabinet of Ministers approved its publication in the Government Gazette,” he said.
