Ambagasdowa Police apprehended two youths on Friday after they allegedly tried to enter the venue of a campaign meeting for Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Namal Rajapaksa in Welimada. The youths were found carrying a toy pistol and were handed over to the Welimada Police for further investigation.
The suspects, a 20-year-old school student and a 23-year-old university student, both residents of Uva Paranagama, were detained after security personnel at the venue conducted a search and discovered the toy weapon in their possession.
According to the Welimada Police, the youths claimed they were trying to enter the event to inform their parents, who were attending the meeting, that they were heading home. The suspects were scheduled to appear before the Welimada Magistrate’s Court last evening. Police investigations are ongoing.
