The deep depression over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, which brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sri Lanka in recent days, will dissipate from today (30), the Department of Meteorology confirmed on Friday (29).Ajith Wijemanna, Director of Forecasting, stated that there is no longer a threat of cyclonic activity.

As of yesterday evening, the system, located about 260 km northeast of Trincomalee, had begun moving northwestward. It has since weakened into a low-pressure area and is expected to make landfall along India’s northern Tamil Nadu coast, significantly reducing its influence on Sri Lanka, Wijemanna said.

Despite the improvement, fishermen have been urged to avoid deep and shallow sea areas from Trincomalee to Mannar via Kankesanthurai, as conditions at sea remain uncertain.

Although the depression has eased, heavy rainfall, exceeding 100 mm, is still possible in Northern areas of the country today. The Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as Galle, Matara, Matale, and Kandy districts, are likely to experience intermittent showers. Evening rain is also expected in other regions, according to the Meteorology Department.
