National People’s Power Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne was unanimously elected as the 23rd Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka yesterday.
His nomination was proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Bimal Rathnayake at the commencement of yesterday’s Parliamentary sitting. Dr. Wickramaratne succeeds Asoka Ranwala, who resigned from the position on December 13 amid controversies regarding the authenticity of his educational qualifications.
In her address, Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed confidence that Dr.Wickramaratne’s leadership would contribute significantly to fulfilling the aspirations of the Sri Lankan people.
Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka also extended congratulations, expressing hope that the new Speaker would uphold his responsibilities and safeguard the evolving political culture.
