News Room : General Election: 7,412 election income, expenditure reports received from among 8,361 candidates – EC

The Election Commission (EC) has issued the breakdown of the election income and expenditure reports submitted by the candidates who faced the 2024 Parliamentary election directly and through the National lists from each district in the country by the deadline that ended on December 6, 2024.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L.Rathnayake announced yesterday (9) that a total of 7,412 election income and expenditure reports have been received from among 8,361 candidates from all political parties who gave nominations to contest the election.

A total of 493 income and expenditure reports have been submitted from among 690 candidates from Independent groups that gave nominations to contest the Parliamentary election.

Only 434 individual candidates out of the total of 527 named National List members have submitted their election income and expenditure reports by the deadline.

It was significant to note that all the candidates of all the political parties and Independent groups who contested the Parliamentary election from Kegalle district have handed in their election income and expenditure reports while all the candidates of all the political parties who contested the Parliamentary election from Matara have submitted their election income and expenditure reports.

Election Commission Chairman (EC) R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said that according to Section 08 A of the Income and Expenditure Act No. 03, 2023, legal action will be taken against the candidates from political parties, political parties, candidates from Independent groups and candidates from the National Lists who failed to submit their election income and expenditure reports by the December 6 deadline.

The EC Chairman further said that candidates who failed to submit their reports by the deadline who will face Court cases as a result may not be able to contest the upcoming Local Government or the Provincial Council elections, the EC Chairman said.
