“Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has sent four names nominated to fill its remaining National List MP seats in Parliament to the Election Commission,” SJB General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara said.
Accordingly, the party has named Mano Ganesan, Nizam Kariapper, Sujeewa Senasinghe and Mohamed Ismail for the remaining four National List MP posts.
Following the General Election held on November 14, the SJB secured five National List MP seats and the SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, had been appointed to one of National List seats of the SJB on November 19. SJB General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara commenting on this said this decision was made at the right time, in accordance with the agreements signed with all parties within the SJB.
The four nominees are expected to be sworn in on Tuesday, December 17.
Meanwhile, the Colombo District Court yesterday issued an injunction order preventing the submission of names to the Election Commission to fill the vacancies of the National List MPs of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya(SJB) without including the name of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress General Secretary Nizam Kariyappan.
After considering a petition filed by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem, Colombo Additional District Court Judge Chamari Weerasooriya issued this injunction to the SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara.
Petitioner Rauff Hakeem claims that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, which he leads, supported the Presidential candidate of the SJB, Sajith Premadasa, in the last Presidential Election.
The petitioner also stated that during the last General Election, his party had entered into a written Memorandum of Understanding with the SJB regarding the contesting of the General Election on October 10. Accordingly, the petitioner states that the SJB had agreed to appoint Sri Lanka Muslim Congress General Secretary Nizam Kariyappan as the National List MP.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding, no matter how many National List MP seats the SJB won, it was also stated that it was obliged to give one of them to the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress. Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said that the four names nominated to fill its remaining National List MP seats in Parliament sent by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya were forwarded for the publication through a gazette notification.
