Former MP and United National Party (UNP) Chairman Vajira Abeywardana said the current Government is implementing the economic transformation laws initiated by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the letter.

He made these remarks at a media briefing held at the new Democratic Front office in Colombo 7, on Thursday (2). UNP, under the leadership of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, commenced its new year’s activities at the party headquarters in Sirikotha, Pitakotte and the new Democratic Front office in  Colombo 7.

Abeywardana further mentioned, “UNP must implement a massive programme to enforce the people’s sovereignty enshrined in the constitution this year. A significant organisation is required for this purpose, and they have already started this programme under the symbol of the elephant.”

Abeywardana said: “Discussions have begun to reveal the new path needed to address the economic, political, and social crises expected in the future. The final programme is set to commence this week with the leader’s approval.”

He said the eighth Executive President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, is prepared to face any crisis that may arise in the country. He took on the challenge alone when the country was on the brink of bankruptcy. Those without understanding have made various criticisms regarding this. It should not be forgotten that the UNP, which was limited to one seat, took on the role of the eighth Executive President. He worked with representatives of the people, whether they agreed with him or not, to overcome challenges.

Although he did not have a majority of supporters from his party, he managed to unite different factions to move forward in the country’s best interest. During this time, more than eighty significant laws were passed to prevent the country from going bankrupt again. Six of these important laws are currently being implemented by the current Government, which is a very positive sign. For example, the current Government is implementing the economic transformation laws to the letter. To change this, a proposal must be brought to Parliament to amend the legislation, he added.
