Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Ratnayake yesterday stressed that the existing Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) must be enforced with caution until a new legal framework is established even though it does not align with the policies of the present Government.
The statement came in response to a query from Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rauff Hakeem regarding an incident at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) MP S. Sridharan, who was on his way to Tamil Nadu, was reportedly stopped by Immigration officials at the VIP lounge, citing a travel ban under the PTA.
After discussions and clarification that no court order supported the ban, MP Sridharan was eventually allowed to proceed.
MP Hakeem highlighted the need for a court order to impose travel restrictions and questioned the legality of the incident.
In response, Minister Ratnayake assured that the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration had been instructed to investigate the matter and provide a report. Additionally, the Defence Deputy Minister has been informed to ensure a thorough review.
The Minister clarified that the incident does not reflect official government policy or guidance and raised concerns about potential misuse of the PTA. He reiterated the government’s commitment to revising the legislation and ensuring due process in such matters.
