Chief Government Whip and Mass Media and Health Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, said in Parliament yesterday that the people of this country will be freed from the burden of maintaining retired Presidents, their wives and politicians. The Minister also said that relief will be provided to the people by changing the political culture of the country.
“We are doing something that the previous Governments and former Presidents who were in power have not done.
We are saving the people of the country from the burden of maintaining retired Presidents and their wives. I will present with statistics how much burden we are reducing from the people. A house was allocated to retired President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Colombo 5. The land is one acre and four perches. The current market value of that land is Rs. 2542 million. The current market value of its mansion is Rs. 56.5 million. The total market value of the mansion allocated for Gotabaya Rajapaksa is Rs. 2598.5 million. Based on the current market monthly rent, the monthly rental value of this house is Rs. 1,275,000. However, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is now moving out of that house.
Next is the mansion allocated for former President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Paget Road, Colombo 5. The land is one acre and 28.7 perches. The current market value of the land is Rs. 3019.2 million. The current value of the mansion is Rs. 113 million. The total value of the land and mansion is Rs. 3132.2 million. Its monthly rental value is Rs. 2.9 million. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has also moved out now. The value of the land of the mansion built for the First Lady Hema Premadasa on Hector Kobbekaduwa Mawatha, Colombo 7 is 1 rood and 10.9 perches and value is Rs.890 million. The value of the mansion is Rs.42.8 million. The combined value of both the land and the mansion is Rs.933.6 million. The current rental is Rs.1.1 million per month. She also left in 2023.
Retired President Maithripala Sirisena’s house which he lived in is 1 rood and 15.1 perches on Hector Kobbekaduwa Mawatha. The market value of the land is Rs.964.3 million. The value of the mansion is 41.2 million. The value of the land and the mansion is Rs.1005.5 million. The current market value for the rental of this mansion is Rs.900,000 per month. He is still there.
The current market value of the 1 acre and 13.8 perches of land on Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 is Rs.3128.4 million where former President Mahinda Rajapaksa currently lives. A 30,534 square foot mansion is being allocated for this couple. Its value is Rs. 229 million. The value of the land and the mansion is Rs. 3357.4 million.
