Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the Government emphasises that Sri Lanka will not allow its territory to be used for separatist activities by any country. “Sri Lanka will not permit its land to be used for China’s separatist activities and that China has pledged to intervene against any actions that harm Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

During a media briefing on Wednesday (22), the minister also stated, “The Sri Lankan Government will intervene against actions that divide the country. Previous Governments have upheld the ‘One China’ policy, and we continue to do so. We do not recognise two separate countries; we stand by the principle of one country. China has supported us in maintaining Sri Lanka as a unified nation against separatist activities. Internationally, China has stood by us and we will continue to receive their support.

“If there are any attempts to promote separatism within China, the Sri Lankan Government will intervene. This is not new; China has internal issues and we will not allow Sri Lankan territory to be used for China’s separatist activities. China has also pledged to intervene against any actions that harm Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, both sides have agreed to implement joint defense training programmes. Chinese projects will not be carried out in a manner that threatens Sri Lanka.

If any projects create unnecessary situations, they can be adjusted with mutual agreement. These agreements are not based on policies implemented within China but are aligned with our Constitution. We can support China internationally as a unified nation,” the minister said.
