Labour Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe told Parliament yesterday that there will be a substantial increase in the salaries of public servants in the upcoming budget.

He added that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has not made any objections to the proposed public sector salary increment. The proposed increase in the salaries of public servants will be implemented in line with the cost of living.

The Deputy Minister said this in response to a question raised by MP Ravi Karunanayake regarding the increase in the salaries of public servants.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had submitted a proposal to increase salaries of public servants by Rs.25,000 in anticipation of votes from public servants the day before the postal votes for the last Presidential Election. However, no increase in the salaries of public servants had been implemented since his term of office from 2022.

The Deputy Minister also stated that recruitment to the public service had been suspended since 2022, and said the Government would continue to implement the decision taken in the past to recruit to the public servants on an ad-hoc basis.
