Former MP Thalatha Athukorala has been appointed as the General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP).
The appointment was made by UNP Leader former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The position of UNP General Secretary had been vacant after the removal of former UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara from the post.
UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said that the UNP will take steps this year to implement a massive programme to empower the people’s sovereignty enshrined in the Constitution.A massive organization network is needed for that.

The UNP Leader made a special appointment today. The UNP was founded on September 6,1946. Its first General Secretary was H.W.Amarasuriya. He lived in Galle and was the richest person in Sri Lanka at that time.So far, 26 General Secretaries of the United National Party have served the party.A woman has never served as the General Secretary of the United National Party or any other political party so far in the history. However, former Cabinet Minister Thalatha Athukorala has been appointed as UNP General Secretary by Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Discussions have already begun within the party level to clear the way for the new path to face the economic, political and social crises that are expected to arise in the country in the future. The final programme is scheduled to begin this week after the approval of the party Leader.
