News Room : Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district – The Island

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 19 January 2025 by the Department of Meteorology 

Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the island.

Rainy condition is expected to continue further in Northern, North-central, Eastern,Uva and Central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva, Central and Southern provinces. Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district.  Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Northern province and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara Districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere.

Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slope of the central hills and Northern, North-central, Eastern and North-western provinces and in Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas around the island and speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar. And up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar will be rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough at times.

The swell waves height may increase (about 2.0 – 2.5 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Hambanthota via Pottuvil. (this is not for land area)

Strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
