News Room : Former Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales found guilty after kissing player Jenny Hermoso without consent

A Spanish high court on Thursday found him guilty of sexual assault over an unwelcome kiss by player Jenny Hermoso and fined him more than 10,000 euros ($10,434.00), but he was released on bail.

Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence for Rubiales in a case that has sparked a debate in Spain about women’s soccer and sexuality in wider Spanish society.

“The ruling prohibits Hermoso from coming within a 200-meter radius of her and communicating with her for one year,” the court said in a statement.

Rubiales, 47, was charged with sexual assault for kissing Hermoso on the mouth. He and three other former FIFA officials are also accused of trying to force her to say the kiss, which took place at the 2023 World Cup awards ceremony in Sydney, was consensual.

A lawyer representing Hermoso was not immediately available for comment.
