Members of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius are eagerly preparing to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of Holi and the country’s National Day celebrations.
Expressing the excitement surrounding the visit, a community member said, “We always celebrate Holi with full enthusiasm. But this time Holi is special because PM Modi is coming here before it. He is our chief guest for Independence Day. We welcome him wholeheartedly.”
In the village of La Laura-Malenga in Moka district, residents are preparing special celebrations to mark the Holi festival in anticipation of the Prime Minister’s visit. The anticipation reflects the strong cultural and historical ties between Mauritius and India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius on March 11-12 at the invitation of Mauritian Prime Minister Naveen Chandra Ramgoolam. He will be the chief guest at the country’s National Day celebrations on March 12. Confirming the visit, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a state visit to Mauritius on 11 and 12 March 2025 to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius on 12 March, where an Indian Navy ship will be the chief guest along with a contingent of Indian Defence Forces.”
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet the President of Mauritius and hold talks with Prime Minister Ramgoolam. This will be his second visit to the island since his last visit in 2015.
Last month, Ramgoolam announced the visit in the Mauritian Parliament, saying, “Following my invitation, I am very pleased to inform the House that Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations. “Despite his very busy schedule and recent trips to Paris and the United States, it is a unique privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality who bestows this honor upon us.”
