News Room : Sri Lanka Pledges USD1 Million in Aid to Myanmar Following Earthquake

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra met Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Swe in Bangkok today, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s solidarity with Myanmar in the wake of the recent earthquake.

During the meeting, Hemachandra conveyed Sri Lanka’s condolences and announced a $1 million humanitarian aid package to support Myanmar’s relief and recovery efforts. He also stated that Sri Lanka is preparing to deploy medical teams and provide health sector assistance to those affected.

Discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in Buddhist cultural diplomacy, education, vocational training, and expanding trade and investment in niche markets. Both sides acknowledged the importance of BIMSTEC as a regional platform for cooperation and connectivity.

Hemachandra thanked Myanmar for assisting in the repatriation of Sri Lankan victims of cybercrime-linked trafficking and called for continued collaboration to facilitate the return of affected individuals.

The two ministers also agreed on the need for a permanent, cooperative solution to illegal immigration, emphasizing strengthened regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
