Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti said in Parliament yesterday that the people of this country have volunteered to pay their taxes.
He said that the people of this country which includes industrialists and entrepreneurs were not refusing to pay their taxes.
The only issue was that they were not fully aware of what was happening to their tax money. The Minister said that there was a long queue at the Inland Revenue Department on September 31st since the Online Tax Payment Platform (OTPP) facilitate the taxpayers online tax payments on real-time is congested with so many people trying to log in to pay taxes.
He further said that the tax payers are willing to pay their taxes since they have accepted the programme initiated by the government. The Minister said some industrialist had personally requested him to take measures to open counters in banks to pay taxes from September 15 to 30.
