Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara emphasised that leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) cannot be handed over to rejected and outdated leaders, as they are further destroying the Party through unlawful appointments.

Addressing a Media briefing in Kandy yesterday (20), Jayasekara highlighted the urgent need for new leadership to revive the Party and expressed his readiness to take on the challenge.

“I have requested the Courts to allow me to take over my duties as the legally appointed Secretary of the SLFP. Once the decision is made, I am prepared to travel across the country, meet genuine SLFP supporters, and work towards rebuilding the Party. If the verdict does not favour us, we are ready to face it and take necessary actions. The final decision on this matter is expected on February 7,” Jayasekara added.

“The current Chairman and Secretary of the SLFP were not appointed lawfully. They have no legal authority as confirmed by the Courts, nor does the Election Commission recognise them as legitimate office bearers of the Party.

Therefore, all decisions made under the SLFP name are illegal. Using the Party’s symbol, the ‘Chair,’ to carry out political activities is also unlawful,” he said, noting the legal complications surrounding the formation of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) using the same symbol.

Jayasekara further stated that he has twice been granted legal authority as the legitimate Secretary of the SLFP by the Courts. Despite this, certain individuals have misused their power to block his entry into the Party’s operations. He specifically pointed to Nimal Siripala de Silva and Duminda Dissanayake as being unlawfully appointed and revealed that a case had been filed in the Colombo District Court challenging their appointments.
