News Room : St. John’s Nugegoda bow out after advancing to second round

Under 19 Division III Tier ‘A’ Cricket

St. John’s College, Nugegoda reached the second round of the Under 19 cricket tournament after a lapse of several years this season.

The team captained by Obhasha Thotawatta competed in group ‘Q’ of the Division III tournament where Jaffna Central, Sri Pangnananda MV, Kotugoda, Lyceum International ,Nugegoda, Wayamba Royal, Kurunegala, C.W.W. Kannangara MV, Colombo, Hindu College, Bambalapitiya and Puthuvila MV, Payagala were the other opponents.

The team finished third in their group behind Jaffna Central (Group Champions) and Sri Pangnananda MV (runners up). They had three victories under their belt at the end of the first round. They accumulated a total of 19 points. Lyceum also had equal number of points but St. John’s could advance to the second round by virtue of their win against Lyceum.

Of the 63 teams that took part in the Division III Tier ‘A’ tournament 24 advanced to the knockout stage.

Obhasha Thotawatta and Jayanthan Abhinash were the leading batsmen for St. John’s this season while the skipper was joined by Piyumal Dewranga, Chathumika Dewmin and Kanishka Kalhara in the bowling attack.

However, the team coached by Sumith Prasanna had to bow out yesterday after they were eliminated by St. Joseph’s College, Wattala in the first knockout match where they were restricted to 79 runs in pursuit of a target of 107 runs.
