Generally, not only in Sri Lankan politics, but also in world politics, the son or daughter who comes into politics after the father or mother is entitled to the seat that the father or mother held in politics. When DS died, Dudley received the DS’s Dedigama seat. Attanagalla was handed over to Chandrika before Mrs. Bandaranayake died. When Premadasa was killed that, everyone thought that Sajith would get the central Colombo seat. But after the assassination of Premadasa, Ranil, who became the Prime Minister, took the seat of Colombo Central. When Sajith entered politics, he had to choose a seat outside Colombo because Ranil did not want to give Sajith a seat in Colombo. Then President Wijetunga and Prime Minister Ranil did not want Sajith or Sajith’s mother or anyone from the Premadasa family to enter politics.

Because of this , Sajith was given the seat in Hambantota, which no one wanted to go. In 1994 U.N.P. Gamini Dissanayake who was the presidential candidate. Gamini was killed and Wijetunga retired and Ranil became U.N.P.leader. After becoming the leader. Sajith decided to contest for the U.N.P. Youth Front Presidency. But Ranil prevented it. Ranil handed over the leadership of youth front to Hambantota district MP Ananda Kularatne. In the 1994 general election, UNP won two seats in Hambantota. Ananda Kularatne won one. The other one by Marvin Silva. Hambantota District was won by the ‘Podu Peramuna’. Mahinda Rajapaksa led Hambantota to that victory. Sajith entered politics from Hambantota after the 1994 general election. Mahinda realized that Sajith was a challenge for him when he won a seat in Hambantotan.
Before 1994, Mahinda was Ranil’s friend from the time when Anura and Chandrika split in Sri Lanka. When Ranil was minister in JR’s and Premadasa’s governments, Ranil supported the SLFP’s Anura team. Mahinda was a strong member of that team. Marvin Silva was also in this team. When Chandrika came to power in 1993, Anura and Marvin Silva joined the UNP with an understanding reached with Mahinda. Mahinda did not leave the SLFP. Mahinda Rajapaksa brought Marvin Silva into politics. After winning the 1994 general election in Hambantotan, Mahinda and Marvin’s friendship continued.
Ananda Kularatne who became the next MP for Hambantota in 1994 was also an old friend of Mahinda because in 1983 during Mulkirigala by-election, when Ananda Kularatne contested from U.N.P., Nirupama Rajapaksa who contested from SLFP who was disliked by Rajapakse family Mahinda even , worked to defeat Nirupama. At that time, when the Bandaranaike family split into two, the Hambantota Rajapaksa family also split into two. Mahinda was with Anura. Nirupama was with Vijaya-Chandrika. At that time, the friendship between Mahindala and Kularatne had been renewed because he worked to defeat Nirupama.

Mahinda used the friendship of Marvin and Ananda Kularatne to destroy Sajith politically. Sajith became a challenge for Mahinda in Hambanthota. Sajith became a challenge for Ranil in whole country. Ranil sought Hambantota Mahinda’s help to stop Sajith from becoming a challenge to him if Sajith won Hambantota one day. For that, Ranil seek the support of youth front leader Ananda Kularatne and Marvin Silva, to Mahinda.
The culmination of Sajith’s fight against this Ranil-Mahinda-Ananda-Marvin alliance was during the LG election in 1997. In this election, Sajith’s candidates in Hambantota were threatened by Mahinda’s supporters. But Marvin’s and Ananda’s candidates were not threatened by them. In 1997, the life of Jalani Premadasa, Sajith’s wife, had a narrow escape. A thug shot her while she was campaigning door to door. Ahangama Kankanamge Gunaratne who contested the Beliatta seat was also shot.

He saved his life very narrowly. He was later elected as the opposition leader of the Beliatta local council. On July 12, 1997, Kankanamge Gunaratne was murdered in the Beliatta market after the 1997 LG-polls. Sajith, who was just a seat organizer at that time, told party leader Ranil to stand against this murder, but Ranil did not pay much attention to it because Beliaatta was Mahinda’s stronghold. Ananda Kularatne and Marvin Silvada did not like to raise their voice against the murder. This could not be tolerated by the then U.N.P. Councilor Ronnie De Mel.

He met Ranil and went to Hambantota and pressured Ranil that a satyagraha should be held against this murder and that it should be organized by him and not by Ananda Kularatne. Ranil was afraid of Ronnie and decided to hold the Satyagraha in Hambantota. The then U.N.P. wanted to take this killing to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Even though MP Mahinda Samarasinghe proposed it, Ranil prevented it. In the end, Mahinda became stronger in Hambantota .

But Sajith defeated Mahinda in the 2000 general election and won the Hambantota district in the 2001 general election as well. Although Ranil formed a government in 2001, Sajith was not given a ministerial post. He was given the post of deputy minister. Ananda Kularathne was given a powerful ministerial position. Sajith fell in Hambantota. In 2003, Mahinda became the leader of the opposition and claimed to be the prime ministerial candidate in the 2004 general election, by winning Hambantota election he claiming Ranil’s prime ministership.

When Ranil learned that Mahinda, who had defended him from Hambantota, is his opponent in the 2005 presidential election, Ranil felt the fear. Mahinda became the president. Ranil was defeated. After the 2005 presidential election defeat, when Ranil was asked to step down from the party leadership, it was Mahinda who advised Ranil not to step down. Mahinda strengthened Ranil’s leadership by taking Karu, who competed with Ranil for the party leadership, into the government.

From 1994 to 2005, Ranil strengthened Mahinda in Hambantota. The game of strengthening Mahinda Ranil started from 2005. When Sajith came to challenge Ranil’s leadership in 2010, it was Mahinda who saved Ranil. When Sajithla was marching along the roads to challage the leadership Mahinda blocked it by sendin a team to carpet the Sirikotha road and closed it for comuters.Ranil was pumped up by Mahinda’s media and beat Sajith until he fell. Ranil somehow preserved the lead. After the 2019 presidential election, MPs and party members unanimously asked Sajith to lead the party, but it was Mahinda who told Ranil not to step down.

Eventually the party split. After Ranil’s seat was lost in the 2020 general election, it was Mahinda and Namal who asked Ranil to come to parliament from the national list. That is to divide the Samagi Jana Balawega and deprive Sajith of the opposition leadership. That didn’t work. In the end, the Podujana Peramuna was divided into two and three. When the struggle came and Gotabhaya asked Mahinda to step down from the post of Prime Minister, Gotabhaya invited Sajith to take over the post of Prime Minister. That’s for lies. When Sajith expressed his willingness to accept the post of Prime Minister due to the party’s influence on the conditions, Gota told Sajith that it was too late gave it to Ranil because the Rajapaksa family was in a firm decision not to make Sajith the Prime Minister.

Gotabhaya decided to step down and when the party leaders met with the speaker to appoint an all-party president, the Rajapaksas made Ranil the acting president out of fear that Sajith would become the prime minister under an all-party president. The Rajapaksas made Ranil the prime minister thinking that Ranil would split the Samagi Jana balawegaya. Ranil was made the president thinking he would trap theSamagi Jana Balawega. Ranil could not do it. Now Ranil has started splitting the bud to protect himself.

From 1994 to 2005, Ranil urged Mahinda to destroy Sajith. From 2005 to 2022, the Mahindas encouraged Ranil to destroy Sajith
Now, Mahindala and Ranil have started to argue with each other saying, ‘Why did my cousin fall in love with the same flower?’ Sajith is still 55 years old. Mahinda is 76 years old. Ranil is 73 years old. Both of them are singing the political swan song.

Generally, not only in Sri Lankan politics, but also in world politics, the son or daughter who comes into politics after the father or mother is entitled to the seat that the father or mother held in politics.
