Forty students at a Panadura school were hospitalised on Wednesday, after they were overwhelmed by toxic smoke.

The students were sent to the preliminary care unit of the Panadura Base hospital after they had fainted.

Police said that some discarded rubber products had been incinerated in an adjoining land and toxic fumes emanating from the fire had engulfed several classrooms.

Teachers rushed the children to the hospital, with the aid of hospital staff.

Police said that the condition of those hospitalised was stable.
